Are Your Employees Flourishing or Languishing?

Did you know there is more to mental health than simply the absence of mental illness? It's true!

In fact, the work of Associate Professor Corey Keyes, a leading sociologist based at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia (USA) has identified that the promotion of positive mental health – sometimes known as positive psychology – goes a long way in not only preventing mental illness but also helping people achieve a state of “flourishing”. Flourishing, he says, is a positive state that is contributed to by a number of factors – such as sense of purpose, autonomy and positive relations with other.  Conversely, not promoting positive mental health can lead to people being in a state of “languishing” where these factors are not present.

So what does this mean for your workplace culture and for your employees?

In March 2011, Corey gave a presentation at the annual AIST Conference of Major Superannuation Funds (CMSF). In this presentation he spoke about the states of flourishing and languishing and what it is that determines one from another. He explores what it is that helps you achieve a state of flourishing and what the factors are that help people achieve it.

Watch Corey’s presentation to learn more about flourishing and languishing and the implications these states have on your employees and workplace.
