How to Approach Staff

Managing mental illness in the workplace

If someone in your business has a mental illness there are steps you can take to assist them to effectively manage this condition.

The Australian Government’s Job Access website provides useful information on what employers can do to support employees who have mental health issues.  Read the Job Access resources on supporting and retaining staff here.

The Australian Human Rights Commission have produced Workers with Mental Illness: a Practical Guide for Managers to provide guidance for employers and managers to support workers with a mental illness.

A simple way to help is to ask, "are you okay?"

It can be tough to know how to help a colleague who is not OK, but doesn't want help. Watch our role play video to get tips on how to support someone at work who may be struggling.

Help and support for those affected by retrenchments

In these challenging times, it is important to know that there is support available for people experiencing the affects of retrenchments or financial loss.  It could be your colleagues and staff that need advice and support about where to get help.

The beyondblue booklet  > Taking care of yourself after retrenchment or financial loss is available to help people look after their health and wellbeing during these tough times. This information is designed to help those affected by the current economic downturn.

For some, financial loss may mean seeking income support, for others it could mean revising retirement plans or cutting down on household spending. Regardless of the circumstances, distress is a common and natural response to unexpected events that involve significant loss and change.
