Young Adults

Thinking about your mental health may be a low priority as you establish your career, finances and personal life, but now is an ideal time to develop ways to recognise and manage any issues that may overwhelm you. Dealing with feelings of stress or anxiety as soon as you notice them allows you to lessen negative impacts and focus on the positives.

There are plenty of things you can do to help you achieve better mental wellbeing.  These can include:

  • Sweat it out.  Exercise for at least half an hour every day. Make it interesting by grabbing a friend for a walk, run, workout or game of tennis or footy after work.
  • Limit the booze.  On a night out, try to alternate water or soft drink for every alcoholic drink you have. Make sure you have a few days a week that are alcohol free.
  • Check it out.  Many health problems can be detected early if you get checked out regularly.  Your GP can help you work out what's going on. Going to your doctor isn’t a sign of weakness – it shows you’re interested in looking after yourself.
  • Reduce debt.  Beat financial stress and get on top of things early by combining credit cards or getting a better deal on a personal loan. Make an appointment to speak with a financial planner or accountant.
  • Buddy up.  Whether you're stressed about work, your personal life or both, make sure you have family, friends or someone trusted to talk to.
  • Reach out. Turn to those around you and ask if how they are going too.
