There are many people with schizophrenia who accomplish amazing things and who would be considered incredibly high achievers with or without the illness. My sister isn’t one of them. Like many people with schizophrenia she plateaued out and has lived slightly outside the mainstream every since, never accomplishing the stratospheric heights expected of her when she was accepted into the conservatorium of music at only 16.

Even though the workplace seems to be a major place where mental health issue begin, it is also a perfect protective factor to good mental health. Most of us spend a significant amount of our waking hours at work, and it is also a perfect place to meet new people, forms genuine relationships, feel a sense of connectedness, purpose and self-worth – all these protectors of mental health. Taking all that into consideration and the fact that suicide remains the leading cause of death for men up to age 44, perhaps a new kind of conversations need to happen at workplaces across Australia.
