Alex is Professor and Director of the Healthy Working Lives Research Group in the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. He is also Head of the Division of Health Systems, Services and Policy in the school; President of the Scientific Committee for Work Disability Prevention of the International Commission on Occupational Health; and a member of the Australian Research Council College of Experts.

Alex leads an applied, interdisciplinary research program in work and health. His research seeks to understand and improve (i) the mental and physical health of workers (ii) worker experiences of sickness absence and workplace injury; and (iii) the design and delivery of insurance, compensation and healthcare systems. Alex has a PhD in psychology and has published over 250 peer-reviewed research articles, book chapters and technical reports.
